Oil and Gas Exploration is a wide-ranging activity on land and at sea seeking new sources of crude oil and natural gas. Normally it is conducted on large land-based or sea-based drilling platforms. By its very nature, Oil and Gas Exploration creates flammable gases, liquids, and vapors necessitating that both the platform and personal be protected from and monitored for explosion hazards. Additionally, both raw natural gas and crude oil commonly contain large quantities of H2S, an extremely deadly gas. Workers are often asked to enter vessels, tanks other confined spaces such as the legs of a drilling platform. Rusting or corrosion may have taken place leading to the possibility of oxygen deficiency. Tanks used to store the oil and gas retrieved have their void spaces purged with inert gases such as nitrogen also leading to possible oxygen deficiency hazards. Explosive gases and hazards such as H2S and benzene are frequently present in these tanks.
